Breed Standard
The Bullmastiff is a large, powerful breed originally developed in England for guarding estates and protecting game from poachers. Known for its gentle temperament and loyalty, the Bullmastiff has specific characteristics that define the breed standard according to major kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Kennel Club (UK).
Here is an overview of the Bullmastiff breed standard:
1. General Appearance
- Size: Bullmastiffs are large, muscular, and well-balanced dogs.
- Height: Males typically stand 25-27 inches (63-69 cm) at the shoulder; females stand 24-26 inches (61-66 cm).
- Weight: Males generally weigh between 110-130 lbs (50-59 kg); females typically weigh between 100-120 lbs (45-54 kg).
- Proportion: The breed is square in build, meaning the height at the shoulder is roughly equal to the length from the withers to the tail.
- Body: The Bullmastiff should have a solid, robust, and compact body with a deep chest, short back, and strong, well-developed limbs.
2. Head
- Shape: The head is large, broad, and slightly rounded, giving the Bullmastiff an imposing appearance. The skull is broad and flat, while the muzzle is short but not excessively blunt.
- Expression: The expression should be calm and alert, with a hint of intelligence.
- Eyes: Dark, round, and set wide apart. The eyes convey a gentle, intelligent expression.
- Ears: Small to medium-sized, V-shaped, and set high, hanging close to the head. When alert, the ears may slightly raise.
- Muzzle: Broad and deep, with a well-defined stop. The muzzle is slightly shorter than the length of the skull, but not overly pushed in.
- Bite: A scissor bite (where the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth) is preferred.
3. Coat
- Texture: The coat is short, dense, and tough to the touch. It should lie flat and not be long or soft.
- Color: The Bullmastiff’s coat can be fawn, brindle, or red. Fawn may range from a pale tan to a dark gold. Brindle coats feature dark stripes on a fawn background. Red can vary from a deep mahogany to a lighter red shade.
- Markings: A dark mask (black coloration) is characteristic of the breed, particularly around the eyes, muzzle, and ears.
4. Temperament
- Disposition: Bullmastiffs are known for their calm and gentle nature. They are confident, loyal, and protective of their families but are typically not aggressive unless provoked.
- Intelligence: This breed is intelligent but can sometimes be independent, so early socialization and training are important.
- Guarding Instincts: The breed was originally developed for guarding, so they have strong protective instincts. They are generally good with children and family members, but their protective nature may make them cautious around strangers.
5. Movement
- Gait: The Bullmastiff moves with a steady, powerful, and purposeful stride. They have strong, muscular hindquarters that give them a smooth, easy motion.
- Reach and Drive: The front legs should reach well forward, while the rear legs drive with power, giving the Bullmastiff a strong, effortless movement.
6. Disqualifications
- Size: Bullmastiffs that fall outside the height and weight ranges mentioned in the breed standard are disqualified from the show ring.
- Temperament: A dog that shows excessive aggression or extreme shyness is disqualified.
- Color: Any color outside the acceptable fawn, brindle, or red is disqualifying.
- Physical Defects: Severe physical defects, such as overly short muzzles (brachycephalic traits), extreme underbite or overbite, and poor movement, would be grounds for disqualification in the show ring.
7. Health Considerations
Bullmastiffs are prone to certain health conditions, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and certain heart conditions. Responsible breeding practices and regular veterinary care are important for maintaining their health.
This breed standard emphasizes balance and moderation. Bullmastiffs should be imposing in appearance, but with an underlying gentleness and loyalty that make them wonderful companions and guardians. Their powerful build is combined with a calm demeanor, making them both protective and affectionate pets.
